Hi. Had my 320 coupe for a few weeks now. The problem is im having what seems like new electrical faults happening every day. I recieved my warranty through the post yesterday and its the most basic level of cover you've ever seen so not surprisingly electrical faults aren't covered!

So far my electrical faults are:
    - Central Locking ocassionally giving up and just not working. Leave it for a while and it will work again. I can still lock it with the key

    - The dashboard indicator arrows sometimes keep flashing even when i've finished indicating. and sometimes the arrows don't illuminate at all

    - The stereo, air con and computer screens ocassionally go dark

    - i-pod connection stops working and reverts back to the radio

    - Steering wheel controls don't work on occassions

Thats all I can think of at the moment however no doubt they'll be new ones soon. Do you think there might just be one fault thats causing all the problems?!

This is really doing my head in, I thought BMW's were meant to be reliable!

slagging the brand cos you have prolly bought a lemon with a worthless warranty is a strange way to start your quest for assistance..

I've had my OBC go dark, but only happenend one time so far.
Most electrical faults on cars (speaking quite genrally here is I'm not a sparky!) are from poor earth connections as a lot of systems will share the same earth bolt. No idea where to check though.

you might be on to something there. few more buttons in the car stopped working for a couple of minutes today. must be a general fault somewhere

My 1999 323ci has got all the exact same problems. annoying is an understatement!!

I have found 2 earthing points just behind the headlights that look like they've seen better days so my plan is to replace them this weekend, if i can explain to BMW what they are! they just look like black junction boxes that all the ground wires run into.

Let me know if you find anythin else out?

    Cheers

Ive had exactly the same problem as you, repeaters not working, central locking going off, BMW put it on their computer and said it was the DATABUS VOLTAGE going too low but cannot tell me the cause, im a bit disappointed really

    Hello mate
Maybe if you could get a wiring diagram for your model of car you may be able to trace the fault back by listing all the faults you have & then seeing if the faulty circuits share a common item i.e.....same fuse / earth point..../ power source etc ...hard to do though without a diagram & harder still if the car uses a multiplex type system !..
Hope that is of some (limited) use !

P.S.....sounds stupid i know but i assume the battery is in good working order ? (voltage / condition etc )......i've seen many people go down the wrong route without checking the obvious first !...after all an electrical circuit cant function correctly if it's power supply is faulty !!!!
