Hi can someone please help me out. I've got an e46 318 1.9 year 2000 and I need to know which diagnostic port I should use to look at engine codes? I have a 20 pin under bonnet and a 16 pin under dash. And any advice on which code reader will work on my car would be much appreciated as I have the management light that is on.

    Cheers

    Steve

Find a laptop with both a 9 pin serial port and usb port if you can. Saves a lot of grief. Get a copy of BMW INPA etc. diagnostics from ebay for a few pounds on dvd. The one from "David Wragg Holdings" now comes with good installation instructions. If you have a laptop without serial port, buy a GOOD quality usb to serial adaptor. Buy a cable from ebay which has the 20 pin plug and 16 pin plug. They plug together for 20 pin socket.
Now you can do all the code reading usually with meaningful messages, looking at things both analogue and as text, and if brave start setting values, but be very careful.
You are not that far away if help required.
