    Hi guys,

A few weeks ago the passenger side rear numberplate light blew on my 2001 e38 728i, I went to change the bulb and still the lamp did not work, I have since taken the lining from the inside of the bootlid to investigate further but have had no luck, and a mutimeter accross the connections reads 0v, swapping the bulb enclosures from the other side (which still works) also makes no difference - does anyone have any further suggestions?

Really appreciate any advice - the bong every time I start up is driving me mad, plus im worried the car will fail its MOT in this state!

Ok, looks like you have a problem within the light control module. It's an easy fix if you are good with a solder iron and are familiar with MOSFET switching transistors.

    Hi Neal,

Coincidentally, I have actually repaired an LCM on a 1997 523i I owned a few years ago, in that case however the main beam stayed on constantly....

Do you know where I could find a guide to repair E38 LCM?

    Many thanks for your advice.

Not really but if you can open yours up and take a close up pic, I can show you which one you need to change by measuring some points on the board. Need a good multimeter as well and it will probably be this transistor...LINK. Just a guess though

    Just a quick update,

After removing the LCM (more of a pain than it seems) and examining the board, I found that the LCM III on my 2001 car doesnt seem to have the faulty infineon chips that earlier LCM's have problems with, and after checking the boot wires again, inside the rubber gasket between the car body and the boot lid I found the culprit, a cleanly severed positive power cable which leads to the numberplate light! bit of soldering and problem solved! worth checking here in future if anyone has similar issues.
