    Hi everyone,

I've just got a BMW 318i which I love to bits, but unfortunately have a minor issue with the mileage on it.

The dash on the car has been changed twice, so the miles showing on the display are wrong (I knew this before I bought the car and bought on a worst case mileage).

Unfortunately, the exact dates and mileages of these changes were not recorded. I've a rough idea / can work it out from the MOT history, but I'd love to be able to correct so the miles are exact. Currently, The dash is about 30k short of the real miles.

I've heard there is *something* in the car that records the true mileage regardless of what the dash says and it cannot be changed. Is this true and if so, can I access this or do I need to go see BMW?

Thanks for any help / pointers!!

I don't think there is mate.

Well, if it is BMW would be shooting themselves in the foot. A family friend of mine sold her Mini Cooper to BMW, when she went back to the garage a few weeks later they had dropped the mileage on the counter by 15k! So I assume if there was something in the car that does this, they'd be taking a huge risk.

OMG that's shocking... one thing to have a wonky reading due to dash replacements being done a bit cack-handed, another to have it just clocked off - esp by BMW!
    Cheers for your reply mate

No worries mate. Obviously im not a 100% certain, but if there was one, I'd have thought it would be a known factor.

Best bet would be to ring local independant BMW specialist, or main dealer and ask them

I think there might be a chip in the clocks that records the milage but that will be in the original set of clocks and I take it you don't have them ? Not 100% just something someone said on here a day or two ago.

The DME will record the real mileage off the car in kilometres IIRC.

You can get some dash companies to come out and change/"correct" the mileage for around £30 - They don't need to see proof but BMW will.

Mileage is stored on the ECU and only certain diagnostics machines can access this information.Trying to clock the car on the dials will cause the tamper dot to come on unless you have the right equipment to do so AFAIK

    Thanks for all the replies.
No, unfortunately don't have the original clocks, nor the second set, third set are those fitted lol.
I will speak to BM and see if they can read the miles off the ECU, will let you know what they say.

    Hi everyone,
BMW confirmed that they can't read the DME(?) but can perform a hard reset on the dashboard clocks for £95 plus VAT, but they couldn't guarantee that would work
    Oh well!
