I've recently bought my first BMW, it's a 316i Compact!

To start with there were no problems. Over the course of the last week the battery has gone dead practically every day. I have checked the looms in the boot and as far as I can see there are no problems with wires chaffing and shorting. All wires are completely intact. Not only has the battery gone dead, when I turn on the headlights I get no lights come up on the clocks. My indicators work fine, as does my petrol light (ha!) and other lights that aren't the back lights. I can't imagine it being the bulbs. I've looked at the fuses and all of the fuses under the bonnet (I was surprised there is no internal fusebox, it seems like a small amount of fuses for such a high dependancy with electric, well everything!)

I assume someone is going to suggest searching these faults, I have searched and haven't found the answer that I'm looking for so any knowledge on this subject would be brilliant!

My friend has exactly the same car, however he hasn't suffered either of these problems!

    Thanks in advance!

Fully charge the battery, then re fit to car, attach a multimeter, read voltage say its 12.7v then start car, if volt increases to say 14.0v then alternator is working.
Turn off car leave over night then re read voltage if its dropped from first reading then battery is gone.
I have a alternator if it is that, I break E36 Bmws.

    Regards

    no not stupid at all
you will need a multi meter set to read volts
then with the car running put the probes on the battery terminals
you should see 14.4v on the meters display if its lower than 13.4 then its well fooked

Ok. So it turns out the alternator has had it. Managed to get a replacement from a friend. Anyone have any idea as to the lights on the clocks going out? Alsk, will this cause MOT failure?
