I've just bought my 3rd E23, a 1986 728i A SE which will be used as a daily driver. My only gripe is at present only the speedo and odometer work. I have no service indicator lights on so from researching today am thinking my first port of call should be replacing the SI Board batteries as these can put the gauges out too apparantly. Could duff SI batteries indeed cause my rev-counter, fuel gauge, temp gauge and econometer all to pack up?
There seems to be conflicting opinions as to which batteries to use, AA or 3V, NiCad or NiMh and a US rebuild company uses lithium batteries etc, some say source Varta brand items as they'll last longer and not leak like cheaper brands... can anyone suggest where to source the best batteries from, and preferably online - I understand they must be rechargeable?
Secondly, if it transpires my SI board is ruined from leaking batteries, does anyone know of a UK-based company that can rebuild SI boards please? I know of Program Inc in the US, but this will involve high shipping costs and delay.
Just out of interest I will call my BMW main dealer for a price on a new SI board, if indeed they're still available as sometimes they pleasantly surprise you!
