    Hi
well this is my first post and could really use some help

my 325 tds se has got starting problems, i.e it wont start lol

after 3 garages looking at it the only conclusion that made any sense was that the DDE control unit was broken and needed replaced, i can get this from bmw for 1400 quid, however i would prefer a cheaper option so have been looking at scrap yards and so on as have been told a can fit a unit from any 1995 tds.

the problem i have is that i cant find much on the dde control unit online anywhere, and have just seen a post which said the dde unit was the same thing as the ECU bmw just like to call it a dde to confuse people. does anyone know if this is true as i have seen a hundered ECU's as this seems to be the part i need to fix my car. thanks.

I'm no expert on diesels but, did any of the garages say any more about why they think it's the DDE (ECU). Did they say what was missing? I assume it turns over. Did they say if it's not getting a spark/fuel etc. Someone on here may be able to assist with a bit more details. Did the DDE get wet at all?
I assume the DDE will be the same as the equivalent DME on the petrol cars and will operate along with the EWS (anti theft). If this is the case, and your car is 1996 then I doubt you will get away with just replacing the DDE.

In answer to your main question is yes, a DDE/DME is the same as what almost every other car manufacturer in the world call an ECU!
