    Hi Folks

Having had a drive of my mates BMW I have decided to buy a 1998 M3 Evo. After viewing the car and leaving a small deposit a fiend noticed during the test drive that the airbag light was on. This has now been fixed by the owner and the evo has been granted a new MOT.

When you startup the car, the check control light comes on for about 15-20 seconds, and then it goes out. The orginal radio has been replaced with a sony head unit so Im not sure wether or not there is an issue.

The sale is to be completed tomorrow so if anyone can offer any advice or guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Nesbo

does it have a obc fitted. not sure if they come standard in a m3 evo. however i have one fitted in my 323 which was retro fitted and i do not have check control so whenever i start the car it does as ytou say this is because it hasnt got it.

if you do then im sure it means that something is wrong in the check control. ie bulb or whatever.
dont take my word as not sure on check control and how it works i just posted incase you have the same issue as me.

    Cheers for your reply mate.

Im not sure if it does have and OBC or not. Having looked on YouTube and other sites it would seem that the message comes via the LCD on the Radio (now missing). My mate has a 7 series and his check control message (brake linings) comes via an LCD on the dash. Just worried incase it is an issue and may cost £££ to fix.

No - Check Control just warns you of consumables. Such as brake lights out, low water in windscreen washers etc etc. At worst, it'll be low water in the radiator - But surely you checked the radiator before putting a deposit down ?

Check the OBC computer next time you see the car, and it'll tell you what needs filling up, or replacing.

Mine goes off pretty regularly on my M3 when I accelerate hard - comes up screen wash low level (the sensor is iffy)... If the check control going off it will only be something like this as the brake light warning etc., will not go off unless you turn the ignition off - to make you take note and fix the issue...

Yeah - Sometimes it's false. My first 328 had a dodgy radiator sensor. It always said it was low on water, when in fact, it was full.

I sometimes get a low washer fluid warning too, but it has to just be close to the sensor, then I boot it, and the warning comes up.

Can't get anymore water in mine, but it came up again today.... Same sensor as the radiator IIRC and they are notoriously rubbish..

If the "check control" light goes out in a short time then it can only be a "minor warning" anything else stays on until it's rectified or the ignition is turned off...

    Guys thanks for your replies.

Yeah, gave her a good run over before the deposit went down. Engine sounds lovely (no rattles etc), oil is fresh and the collant is nice an clean. Air bag light was on but apparently has now been sorted (lose connection behind the wheel). Whilst swotting up came across the instrument self test so will give that a go tomrrow before handing over the money.

    Thanks again lads
