I have looked at getting my car a tracker because as you are in the same boat, ill only get a fifth back of the value of the car.
My idea is that you can track a mobile through one of the many sites on google for as little as 17p.if i was to rig up a cheap pay and go phone in a hidden place with a local 12v supply with an in car charger, maybe behind the dash? the idea behind that i dont think it would flatten the battery as it only charges when it is used or left for a long time, would i be right???
its not going to alert you when its stolen but at least you would no were it is.ive had one stolen from my house only to chase them on foot.it turned up a week later 2 min from my house a bare shell.ba**rds!!
    what do you people think???

How many people have had issues where they have put there phone on charge and for some reason it didn't happen?

What if the car is driven into a poor reception area?

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night just relying on a mobile.

It would also be freaking annoying if the phone kept ringing too, you wouldn't be able to answer it to tell them to p*** off either... not without dismantling the car

Buy a tracker, they're worth every penny

I don't think it's all that reliable - I have a Samsung Tocco Ultra, which has GPS built in, and I put an app on it, which would draw a visual route of where the car has been.

I tried it out for fun, and it looked like I was driving through fields rather than using road's :p

It could be just the phone/app I used, but I don't think it's upto the job.

It's not the route you are interested but the final location. The app you used probably only sampled every 30 seconds or something as well and the mapping worked it out from there.

As long as it pinpointed where the car ended up job done.
