I have a 2001 318i which has been parked on the driveway for several months, and has a flat battery.

I can jump start the car from my other BMW but am not able to take the car out for a long drive to charge the battery as its declared SORN.

I bought one of these on amazon - Maypole Battery Charger. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maypole-7416...ry+charger+car

I connected it to the battery in the boot and left it on charge for 3 hours. It indicated that the battery was fully charged, but the car won't start.

It still starts if I connect the jump leads from my other BMW, but as soon as I switch it off, it won't restart.

What are the next steps? Is it maybe the alternator? Or should I be connecting the battery charger to the terminals in the hood instead and leaving on for longer?

I just want the car to start so I can get rid of it.
