    Hi, could anyone tell me if these actually do anything or are they simply to light up the gear shift surround?

    They are comfort lighting. Just as you say, lights up the console.

    yeah play with (oh er) your dash brightness knob (!) and you'll see them dim and brighten in synch with your dash display.

    Cool, thought they were. Dont want them thats all, think i will paint them!

    Not really...Unclip the interior dual light pack located in the headlining near the windscreen and pull the plug
