If anyone has an Android, I have a Samsung Tablet and on the store theres an app called Torqie Lite (OBD2 & Car). It has a very good rating and is meant to read fault codes, temperatures, engine performance etc. You need something that is bluetooth and plugs into the ecu (Im guessing). All Ive found on ebay are these devices but for vehicles 2001+

Anyone use this or something similar which would work on a 1997?

Nope, they work on the EOBD protocol which isn't included in pre 2001 petrols.
