Picked up a 318i convertible on the cheap last weekend, the roof button didn't work.

I have managed to find out the motors needed clicking back in and ive reset the system using the button but only the cover will raise/lower. I have checked the 3 fuses in the engine bay but was wondering if anyone had any idea as to why the roof wont raise? Obviously in this weather its not particularly needed but would be nice to have it working.

    Cheers

Can you hear the header lock motor releasing the front the of the roof from the windshield frame? It is not uncommon for the header lock drive cables to fail. There are a number of micro-switches involved in timing/signalling the various roof functions. You will need the necessary diagrams for this to reliably troubleshoot the system. It may be that the previous owner was operating the roof manually due to the failure, hence the motors being unlatched.
