RADIO RECEPTION> 1999 E39 523i Auto. Getting very poor reception on FM. Is it possible to fit an outside aerial to overcome the prob? I have checked and cleaned the connections but no change.http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...milies/mad.gif

It might be possible to fit an external one, but the original radio unit in the rear c pillar also works as an amplifier, so the regular radio might be looking for stronger signals.

Thanks for the reply. Is it the amplifier that you are talking about. I checked these connections, however, when I removed the aerial lead, the radio still worked.

Sorry. The last message may sound a bit thick, but they are just boxes to me. I followed some instructions iIfound on the net to check the system.

That's what I'm talking about, they are aerial amplifiers. Yours may be busted.

Ok TheEnd. Thanks again. Is there a simple way of testing it before buying another?

I don't think so, the radio signals would be hard to test for.
If you can find the part number on yours, have a look around ebay, and you should be able to pick one up cheaply.

Ok again and thanks for the help. Will spend some time having a 'fiddle' with it and see if it improves before the ebay search.
