    Hi All,
I Have a 520i 1998 with the auto dimming mirror, had the car for about 4 months.

The mirror has never worked in the car have tested it with a touch ,covered the sensors etc, but still never worked, its ib good condition no leaks or anything, a few night ago i was driving along the motorway when i realised it sterted to work as it should and very quick at changing with the lights behind, stopped the car got out and when i returned to the car it had stopped working again, to night something, it started to work again then stopped , any idea?
    thanks for any replays

    steve

Does it have an ambient light sensor on the front of it? I'm not sure about the older models...

    Basically there are 2/3 inputs:
Ambient light sensor - Makes sure it's dark enough to work.
Lights on signal - Makes sure you have your lights on before it starts working.
Following light sensor - Detects when there is a bright light following you.

One of the above could be faulty (bad sensor/loose wire)

Question - Is your rear window tinted? My mirror stopped working unless the car behind had main beam on in my previous car as the light sensor couldnt detect the following light...

something seems to tell me it may have something to do with the gear lever, its a steptronic, and it might not be deactivating the live wire from reverse? , as think that it does not work in revers

Had this trouble on '94 540. I took the mirror off and cleaned the contacts in the plug (Maplin contact cleaner but "deoxit" the best), and cleaned the "eye" on the front. It worked fine after that, so I don't know which it was. However, while taking the mirror off I slipped and cracked the screen. A mirror is cheaper than a screen!
