    Afternoon gents,

I know a fair bit about E38s in general but this one is beyond me I'm afraid...

I'm selling a 1997 E38 at the moment and a guy from Germany viewed it last week. He brought a laptop with him and connected it to the car, then claimed that the mileage had been manipulated. I was not there so my mate left him alone to look around the car, so I have no idea what this software was. He has since told me by email that the mileage is stored in 5 or 6 different places on an E38, but from my limited research on the net most things I have read say only 2 places.

Does anyone know for certain how many places the mileage is stored in? I suspect he is trying to blag me to get a lower price.

He also complained that the engine did not idle perfectly so he thinks there is something wrong with it. Now I would have thought that if his software can interrogate ECUs for mileage info, it would also be able to report on engine parameters and faults etc, no?

I realise that this info could be useful to someone trying to clock a car, so maybe a reply by PM to me would be better. If anyone suspects that I'm interested in clocking the car, Kevin Whittaker knows me and hopefully would vouch for me that this type of activity is not my thing (and my 728i has 208k on it )

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Bryn.

It's a new one but it sounds like "look mate, I'll do you a favour and give you a tenner for it" scam. Tell him to "Foxtrot Oscar" and wait for a sensible buyer.

TBH, I would be VERY wary of letting someone plug some random software into my car. You *can* break things through the diagnostic interface.

The first company I found that does "mileage correction" says this.....

"BMW vehicles up to 2005 have the mileage stored in 4 locations, these are the instrument cluster, the EWS (immobiliser unit) the LCM (light control module) and the ignition key. Vehicles built from 2005 onwards have the ability to store the mileage in any of the 120 + ECU's on the vehicle. Everytime a fault occurs it will be logged by it's controlling ECU along with a fault code and the mileage value at the time of the fault. (see below for more info) As part of our mileage correction service we carry out a deep memory scan which scans every onboard ECU"

No there isn't. But even if there was, I used to do 25k a year in my 728 so could easily take 15k off if I was so inclined and the MOTs/service records would still stack up.

Anyway I've asked him what software he used... no reply as yet

    Cheers,
    Bryn.
