    Hi all.

Am new so bear with me!!!

I recently bought an excellent condition 99 plate 318i E46. I had the instrument cluster out because the rotter who I bought it of had strategically placed a piece of card to hide the airbag light which was constantly on....

I invested in the BMW B800 scanner to read the codes and came up with these...

05 - Firing circuit, belt tensioner, driver side
18 - Seat occupancy detector, passenger
06 - Firing circuit, belt tensioner, passenger side
    01 - Internal ECU error.

The faults are live as the reset does not work, so what I'm trying to ascertain is what's wrong. I have been told the top three codes are common faults but the internal ECU error worries me. Does this mean my ECU is shot or is it simply reading an error due to the other three faults? Also can the top three faults be caused by just one fault eg dodgy wiring connectors and if so, where would my first investigation be?

Have disconnected the battery unplugged the underseat yellow connectors, used a bit of wd40 and connected - faults still there.

Out of interest if I have to buy a new module can it just be replaced with a second hand one or does it require coding? If it does how much does that cost? Thanks

    Anyone?

    Any advice is gratefully appreciated!

It might need coding, but you can always try one first.

    Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Would that last fault be a definitive problem with ECU? Is it a definite replacement job? Also if it is faulty could there be the possibility that the other faults are false? Or is it likely I have multiple issues?

    Ta!

It is most likely to be multiple issues, but if the ECU error didn't clear, that can also be there.

I would probably start on fixing the others first, as they are common and likely, and no reason to think they are a symptom of anything else.
Once those three are gone, see if the light goes out on a reset, or if the ECU error remains.

Airbag ECUs should be cheap, I can't see them costing more than 20-ish.

Thanks again. Regarding the other three faults I wouldn't know where to begin. I've discovered you can buy and occupancy sensor bypass which I may try??

How would you suggest I tackle the tensioners?

The tensioners are usually down to the wires too.

BMW had a repair kit, and were stupidly overcautious, with info like cut out a length of wire and replace with the special repair wire of exactly the same length...

Generally, the wires flex too much over time and break up inside, so a new bit of wire usually fixes them.
