I am sure this has been asked and if you can point me to the right place ia would be greatfull.

Are there difference's between the above engines wiring looms to warrent changing the ews units is it not possible to just change the engines without changing the engine management unit(ecu).Have got a 97 316 with no engine but has its ecu and am able to get a 98 318 engine for free and am looking for an easy life. Chassis no's are jb20265 and na00552. I hope there is an easy way to do this.
P.S. i can get hold of the 98 ecu ews key and barrel if i have to but as i say i am looking for an easy life.

    Many thanks in advance.

The engine i am getting is attached to a autobox. Am able to get all of the black box's and the wiring loom from the engine to the ecu as well as the ign key and barrel. The engine is a 98/318 m43 and the car is a 97/316 m43. I hope some body will have an answer. Many thanks in advance.

    Dare to be different.

pretty sure as it is just an engine(AS ITS THE SAME ENGINE ) change you wouldnt need ecu etc but would benefit from 318ecu etc for added performance and smooth running

There were two incarnations of the 316 and 318 engine, the M40 and the M43.

    JB20265 is a Euro RHD 316i (M43) manual coupe

    NA00552 is a South African 318i (M43) auto saloon

The engines are the same type (M43) and therefore the loom should be almost identical, however there may be some additional options on the South African car to deal with the demanding climate and variable quality of fuel.

If the engine ran OK in the donor car then you chould be able to swap the engine and change the ECU & related parts over without difficulty.

If you plan to remove the auto box and fit your manual you'll need a different ECU for a 318i manual as they are specific to the engine/gearbox combination.

Is there any way the auto engine ecu can be got to work in the manual car apart from changing the ecu for a manual one.

It will still fire the car up and run but it's programmed to take a feed from the auto box CPU which has various sensors. All I can suggest is you try it and see if it runs ok.
