recently purchased a mint 1995 730i e38 but had a knackered lcd display, figured no big big job to fix with a new ribbon i was wrong broke the stupid thing anyway. my point is that after looking into it, phoning bmw to see what they could do i was told that replacing the speedo was impossible as it has to be coded to the car?? is this true why cant i just pick a good used one up from the scrappy and bang that on surely its the cars on board comp that stores all the data.

any help would be appreciated and i hope i posted this in the right section as am new to these forums

There's VIN data and mileage stored in the clocks.
If you are lucky, there might be a coding plug in the back, otherwise you'll need to get the mileage adjusted to suit.

It will work, but the mileage will be different, and there will be a little "tamper" light just next to it.
Make sure you get the V8 clocks, and auto or manual to suit.
