    Hi there,

I'm new to BMW ownership, having acquired a '98 328i E46 left hand drive through my other half's late Father, who lived in Luxembourg. Apologies if I've missed a previous thread that discussed this subject (happy to be pointed there if there is); I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Re-registering it here and seems straightforward enough. It has an EU certificate of conformancy, is less than 10 years old (just), so there is a form upon which I can declare that the following bits have been changed (with supporting documentation):

    1) Headlights
    2) Speedo to mph (currently only in kmh)
    3) Foglight to UK offside (currently UK nearside/continent offside)

I tried a BMW dealer first for the worst case scenario - c. £2000

So far I've had mixed messages with regards to 1) - some say these must be replaced/changed to RHD spec, some say that they can be modified (including my local garage where it will be MOT'd )

I've found a couple of companies who offer kmh to mph&kmh conversion, so it looks like I'll send the instrument cluster off there......not sure what happens with the kilometre to mileage/odometer reading though (an ECU thing?)

The foglight I'm told, is the easy bit, but I'm not sure how this is done

Any advice on any of the above would be gratefully received.

    Many thanks

    Chris

    Hi Chris.

    Its pretty easy mate.

    Answers.

1/ Not 100% on this, the body of the lights is identical, and Im 90% sure so are the internals...only the beam needs adjusting.
Worst case scenario the reflector mirrors will need to be replaced for RHD ones (if they are different) at a cost of about £80 in parts

2/ Speedo to MPH, this can be done using the cars OBC (on board computer) I will post up how to do it tomorrow. (late now!)

3/Foglight. Piece of cake, remove blanking plate in LHD bumper, extend wiring from NS to OS, refit foglight.
Any competent mechanic can do this for you.

thanks mate - good to hear I'm on the right track. Interesting to hear that I can change to mph using the OBC - my speedo has kmh stamped on it - but great if I can.

The rear fog light should be a case off putting a bulb in I would have thought, you may also have to remove the plastic blanking plug in the offside light if there's one fitted. it will be where the bulb goes so easy to see.

Well I've had the instrument cluster changed. I used www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk, cost me 79 quid to get the speedo changed to mph and kph/kmh and, I didn't realise, the economy guage to mpg (from l/100km). They did a great job, I'm very pleased.

I've had a look at the rear foglight - it'll need a new bulb holder as the one fitted doesn't have a hole for the bulb! Should be easy to get hold of one and extend the wiring over.

    cheers

    Chris
