You will need to stick with white ones to the front, red to the rear.

Providing they are wired through a switch inside the vehicle, they are perfectly legal as they would be classed as non-obligatory lamps and therefore not fall under the MOT testing criteria.

You simply have the switch in the 'off' position for an MOT, so when the tester switches the side lights on, the number plate screw lights remain off unless you flick the switch. Once you get back from the MOT, put the switch in the 'on' position and each time the side lights are on, so are your number plate lights.

Should you get stopped by the Police driving on a road, you can show them the switch and explain they are wired through a separate switch. Most will tell you to switch them off and be on your way.

The most common excuse is 'I forgot they were on. I had my mates round at mine and I was showing them'

Please don't get flashing ones as you will be committing an offence under the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations as the lamps are firstly blue (reserved for emergency vehicles) and would not be showing a steady light.

The only lamps exempt from showing a steady light are the turning indicators
