    Hi,

I purchased a 2009 BMW 318d M Sport about two weeks ago, and in the last couple of weeks I've been noticing a weird vibrating/rattling noise coming from the middle of the dashboard. I recorded a video of it happening this morning and have uploaded it to YouTube, the link is:

The noise only happens when the car is:

o Either stationary or moving slightly (at traffic lights or a roundabout)
o When I apply the brakes firmly it happens constantly (as you can hear in the video - but it does still happen when my foot is off the brake)
o Only happens when the car is in drive - seems to be fine when in reverse or park.
o I noticed today that it starts to happen within five minutes of any journey, so not an instant thing.

The car itself is driving absolutely fine, I purchased it from Stratstone and it was given a Service and MOT before given to me.

Any idea what it could be?

    Thanks!

Yeah, basically either when the car is slightly labouring or at a complete stand still

In the video it's on, but i've tried turning it off and the noise is still there.

I've been researching online and a lot of people that have been complaining about a vibrating/rattling dash have said it could be something that's loose. I just don't know where to look

I don't think it's the bluetooth set rattling as I probably would have noticed it moving. Also, this noise only happens at low revs and is absolutely fine when I'm going over like 10mph.

It sounds more as if it's coming from the middle dashboard heaters.

Damn shame that that rattle is even there in a car of that is claimed as the ultimate driving machine,.
But all I would suggest is labour the engine more by hand brake on and try to move in 1st or 2nd gear and try to amplify the sound to see
where its coming from.A rattle that sounds as if its from the dash could be emanating from the engine bay.

Sounds more like a cable in the engine bay vibrating, throttle cable, or possibly the big plastic cover over the engine vibrating, I know mine does, try putting your hand on it when the engine is running to see any difference?

I got my sister to sit in the car while i played around with the engine cover. When i lift the engine cover slightly the noise happens in the car! So i'm assuming it is a loose engine cover? Is there anything i can put on top of the engine cover to apply some pressure to keep it down? I just want to do this so that i can drive around and see if the noise is still happening.
