    Hi,

My car will be 2 years old come the end of Feb. I've had issues with the battery lately....actually its not working! So last night I took the battery out the boot as I had been waiting 3 weeks for a call back from my dealer with regards to warranty on it as I didn't expect it to be dead.

I removed the battery, got it indoors and discovered that the Negative terminal has corrosion! Clearly worring when BMW place the battery in the boot, insulted and AGM batteries are sealed units. Positve Terminal is fine.

    Anyone else suffered this?

I've been advised by my dealer that the car will have to be towed to them for a replacment battery to be fitted and i'm not best pleased to be honest. I would rather that they change it, let me fit it, drive it to them and then they code the car. But no!

Its parked in the most akward place and i'm assuming that the automatic handbrake applied in the Auto will have disengaged when the battery died......however i'm not so sure, neither are they only adding to my headache.

Oh and i'm not paying £200 for a battery which seems to be faulty!

No just black and without a power indicator. Well thats how its described in the parts catalogue for the service guys and its described as that because BMW do not advise what type of battery it is in the handbook or on the battery. But then since 2002 I believe most BM's have come with AGM batteries.

I can get a Varta one (excat same one as BMW sell) for £120. Just a pain in the whats nots.

But I would hate to see what price the bigger batteries are because when I called on the 4th the price I was quoted was £128 including vat and now its that price. Aye right!

I'm just concerned that corrosion seems to indicate acid on the terminal, however this is a sealed unit so wondering where it is coming from.

This explains it better than I could. Common problem with car batterys of all types....

Corrosion at the battery terminals can prevent a car from starting, by adding electrical resistance. The white powder sometimes found around the battery terminals is usually lead sulfate which is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. The corrosion is caused by an imperfect seal between the plastic battery case and lead battery post allowing sulfuric acid to attack the battery posts. The corrosion process is also expedited by over-charging. Corrosion can also be caused by factors such as, salt water, dirt, heat, and humidity in the air, a crack in the battery casing, or loose battery terminals. Inspection, cleaning, and protection with a coating are measures used to prevent corrosion of battery terminals.

It is a lead terminal? As in grey soft metal with a white fur?

The corrosion is common, and most people avoid it as they are usually rubbed with vaseline to stop it.
A clean with a wire brush and reclamping, with a touch of vaseline should be all it needs.

The corrosion might be airborne moisture or a poor contact (dunno which!) as I've seen people way more learned than me in electrical matters advise sealing the post with a dab of grease.

Cheers guys, I took pic and gave it a little bit of a clean last night before checking the voltage and giving it a charge for a few hours. Going home early to give the connectors a clean and to see if the battery will work this time.

BMW offer a 4 year warranty with their batteries, however like always they will try everything not to cough up. Interestingly enough, if you get the same battery from Varta they give a 6 year guarantee with theirs and will replace any faulty batteries without question.

You can push your car out of the way if you need to Angie.
Take off the gearlever gaiter and there is a little red button, press that and the lever will move out of Park
