Thanks for the replies and it was worth a try, shamon, but it isn't the DDE relay. Had to resort to getting it taken to my local stealer, Listers BMW in Boston. They've diagnosed a duff DDE and want to charge me the princely sum of £1200 to replace it. I'll be refusing their kind offer and just paying the £200 or so the diagnosis and recovery cost. Plan is now to send the DDE off to ECUtesting.com who will repair it for about £300. I've already used their service once this year when the ABS unit packed up.
One thing bothering me though, apart from why a flat battery has buggered the DDE, is that there were a lot of other modules playing up, such as the ABS, when I was trying to diagnose the problem with DIS. I was also getting a lot of diagnosis bus errors. BMW are suggesting that the DDE is causing noise on the bus which is causing the comms problems. Thing is, how do they know it's the DDE which is causing the noise and not some other module?

I didn't do anything daft with the battery like the guy in that tale, though, or try and jump start the car. I think the damage was done when I attempted to start it with the duff battery. Possibly the large voltage fluctuations with the starter solenoid clicking in and out corrupted the DDE. Whatever it was, it's a pretty poor show that something as basic as a flat battery can do so much damage. A cautionary tale for others though. If your battery's on it's way out, get it replaced before it gets to the point where it won't crank the engine over.

Well, ECUtesting have done the biz again. Got the DDE back today, plugged it in and it struck up first time. No faults showing though I haven't plugged the laptop back in to see what it's saying, too sodding hot out there! I can't give them full marks this time though as they were a bit tardy in getting it back to me. They told me they'd found the fault on Monday and though I paid by paypal first thing Tuesday it didn't get sent out until late Wednesday. Still, at least I'm back on the road and 900 quid better off than if I'd let BMW sort it. Will take a while to rebuild my relationship with the car again, though.

That's OK mate, I always finish my threads, find it really annoying when they just fade out with no conclusion.
