Hi all, I have a 2006 1 series 120 diesel M sport. I think I may need to replace the battery in the near future but I have been told that if I fit a replacement battery myself then it needs to be linked to the cars computer in order to regulate the alternator charging correctly. Is this correct and if so can I do it myself or is it a dealer job? Any comments would be welcome.

If it has an IBS then it will need to be coded to accept the new battery, but I doubt you have one so just replace it .

As above . Do you have Prof Nav, Telematics, heated seats, or other heavy consuming options on your car?

Not at all mate...my missus drives the auto 120d and it doesn't have an IBS, so straight forward change .
Some reading material for any one that wants to know what an IBS is and does ...LINK. Something the BMW techs should read up on too before scaring their customers

The IBS is fitted to the -ve lead of the battery and will look something like this...
