I recently had a car audio "specialist" change out my BMW stereo with a Kenwood so that I could hook up my iphone and everything seemed to go well. I have a 320D SE...
Unfortunately, the steering wheel audio controls don't work and when I asked the "specialist" about this, he said it was most like a blown fuse but that he would check whether the unit Kenwood supplied needed to be activated.
Well, I heard nothing and so resolved to change the fuse myself. Doing a bit of research, the Kenwood steering column adaptor should just work once connected.
However, I nearly reversed into a wall prior to changing the fuse as low and behold, the rear parking sensor is no longer working. I opened up the glove box and checked the wiring diagram. It looks to me as though the fuse is not the same for the PS and steering controls so I'm reluctant to believe the problem is with the fuse (unless the audio guy was REALLY ham-fisted).
Does anyone have any ideas? Since I live in Ireland, I want to hold off taking it to one of the local BMW dealers (they wear masks by day!) so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Have you actually taken the car back back to the Audio specialist or just spoke to them on the phone?
If the steering controls were fine before hand and the Kenwood stereo is supposed to work with the controls then the ball is in their court and they should put it right.
if the guy messed about with the steering colum? hes prob forgot to reconnect the pdc speaker. Happened to me to, drop the trays under the steering wheel and double check
Thanks for the replies guys - the car is actually down in the body shop having a couple of dings taken out but I'll have a check on the PS wiring when I collect it.
The audio guy is a bit of a tool to be honest and I'm not really keen on having him anywhere near my car again!
Sorry to be dumb but are we talking about the tray right under the steering column which is held in by some phillips screws?
The lad who was working on my car last week said the "computer says no" there's nothing wrong with the car so I'm hoping it is just the speaker but I must admit, I know NOTHING about how my lovely car actually works
(Other than: "put diesel in here, right pedal fast, left pedal slow")
Well, this weekend I dropped under the steering wheel and took a look under the panel which is fixed by a series of diamond head screws. Lots of secure cabling, nothing looks out of place but I don't know what it is I'm looking for re; the actual speaker.
I'm going to a BMW dealer on Friday for an oil service and MOT so does anyone know what I can expect from their guys in terms of costs for checking out the PS problem?
I thought it was a bit weird to be honest. I mean, earlier posts mentioned that there was probably a connection not connected under the dash but I can't find anything out of place.
I'm really struggling now though as both problems still persist:
1) no PDC
2) no steering column controls
And the BMW guys at Wayside BMW telling me "your head unit doesn't support the beep"...
I would just be stunned if it didn't work... but maybe it won't?
Perhaps it could be that I have a hands free kit which is going through the speakers and maybe there's not enough "in ports" on the stereo? Seems like a longshot though...
Cheers for the pic - I took of the panelling and I remember seeing the foam part that corresponds to that H40 diagram but I can't remember seeing if it had anything connected...
i know on the E90's and some of the newer BMW's you do need a seperate adaptor if you lose the factory set up to keep the PDC, im not sure about that on E46's though.
OK, both our E90's have speakers in pretty much the same place as the E46, they are mounted on the removable panel that screws to the underside of the dashboard, between the pedals and the steering wheel.
However! Both our E90's have PDC front and rear. The front obstacles are announced through the little front speaker, rearward obstacles are announced through . . . . the rear speakers!
have you got the prof or hifi logic system? if you have the bog standard business then you wont lose the PDC as it has the speaker, Prof and logic use the stereo and dont have the speaker, well they have the speaker but dont use it for PDC
Hmmm... I think it is the Professional but it's back in Ireland so I will check when I get home on Monday.
I've just been giving myself a cricked neck, taken off the panel and I can't see a speaker. The felt soft bit is there but it's not attached to anything and I can't see a speaker where I would expect to see like a cone or something.
Worst case is that it isn't working: is there a way around it?
Just saw Deanos post about an adaptor for the E90. Would anyone know the part number so I can get it ordered and fitted?
Also, any thoughts on why the steering column doesn't work anymore? None of the audio controls are working since the install, despite the Kenwood steering control kit being fitted.
have a look on Connects2.com mate. they do an adaptor for the E90 for the rear PDC when the original headunit is removed. they do all sorts of adaptors
Nice one Deano! Just found the part on there so will give them a call!
Legend!
