I have the same problem in my 320d 2003 150bhp
I have changed pump, relay and nothing.
Test shows fault 4B90 - low pressure on common rail when starting.
Pressure on ignition is about 2 bars, should be around 4 bars.
    CR pressure sensor?? Camshaft sensor??

I have tried with both keys but no different.

    Any idea??

Just taken car to BMW dealer yesterday..they done a diagnostic check on car (which of course started first time, even though it took me ten minutes to start in the morn)...surprise surprise no faults could be found...AAAARRGHHH!!!! so just cost me 83 quid for nowt!! changed the DDE relay like 'gildersol' suggested and still no joy this morn'..so took it back to my indy and left it with him, hopefully tomorrow it wont start with him and he can do some more tests whilst it fails to start.....I,m now losing the will to live and I,ve had to use 'public transport'(how embarrasing!!!!)

Woohoo!!!the car failed to start with indy so could do some checks.......it turns out that some eedjit fitted a parrot hands free kit prior to me buying the car a couple of years back..and he put the relay for this kit where the relay should be for the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay somewhere else...so when the relay was changed some months back the wrong one was replaced and the fuel pump relay remained faulty but would start eventually...presumably they must be the same colour so nobody suspected anything wrong because everytime the car went in to get checked out the relay was working fine......The FUEL pump relay has now been changed and it appears to now be OK(unless of course its just coincidence) time will tell..keep fingers crossed
    cheers everyone for their advice/comments

Good to hear you've got it fixed Stevo, is the fuel pump relay the one thats located in the glove box above the fuses?

Hi Stevo - had the same problems with my 320d - had new fuel pump relay, new pre supply fuel pump but didn't cure the problem. Local diesel specialist diagnosed faulty ECU and said could either sent ECU away for diagnosis and possible repair - car off road for a week, new ECU - over £1000 or power button to pump to manually power the pump to start car. Went for the latter and worked well initially but now find have to hold button in for 2 or 3 mins or car engine stops whereas used to hold in for 10 to 20 secs and then drive off. Reason for reply is that I have a parrot hands free kit fitted and wonder if this is causing the problem. Did you find it was the relay fitted on the left behind the glove box that had been moved?
