Hi guys ...new to this so here go,s..........this is an on going prob' with starting ..when turning the ignition key ,the engine cranks but wont fire up (there is no power to the fuel pump )remove and re-insert the key several times ..and hey presto the fuel pump kicks in and it starts,There is no pattern to this its just random and can be fine for weeks then plays up again, I have had a fault diagnosis check done (4 times now on diff' occasions) and nothing is specific to the problem fuel pump relay has been changed twice ,key recognition ring changed, all connections checked,...once started the car runs sweet so broken wiring isnt the problem ,this has been going on for 12 months now,my local bmw specialist says it wont be the keys (use either key and the prob still occurs)
It seems to me the immobiliser just isnt disarming fist time to allow power to the fuel pump..as you can imagine this is very frustrating at times and my worry is that it will fail to start at some point (probably at 3 in the morning in the middle of nowhere being chased by mad flesh eating zombies..ahem!!!)
Any advise (not about the zombies ) appreciated

I wonder if this could be a crankshaft sensor on it's way out. There have been numerous posts with varying symptoms before. The spark would be inhibited while it was failing and I think the fuel pump can be affected as well. A good garage should be able to read live data while the engine is running which may show whether a sensor is outwith it's operating parameters.

crank sensor was the first thing to be replaced months back..problem persisted..there is no pattern (hot weather/cold/damp/dry) its just random,.....can be months between probs as if there is a minor fault on a relay perhaps that has something to do with immobilising the fuel pump ..then it wakes up and is fine again!
I have had a small LED put in my ashtray which is in the positive feed from the ignition to the fuel pump.. just so a faulty pump can be elliminated..(no light ..no power to pump ..wont start)..obv' when light is on (fuel pump noise ..car starts)
I keep thinking this is an immobiliser issue or am I barking up the wrong tree

The EWS (immobiliser) does not permit the starter to turn if it is triggered so it may not be immobiliser related.
As for the fuel pump, it will run briefly for a second or two when you switch on the ignition to build up pressure. When you are cranking it won't be powered until the engine starts running. Is this what you see with your LED?

when ignition is turned to pos 2 you can hear the fuel pump humming,LED is on and all is well and it starts no problem(LED constantly lit, showing power supply to pump)...however turn to pos 2 and no humming (LED not lit, obviously no power supply to pump) It will crank but no fuel/pump so wont start.....I know this is like looking for a needle in a haystack..but its driving me mad..and those zombies will be getting nearer!!!

No..mines got a sony head unit and it works as normal as does everything else (heater/fan etc just no power to the pump then all of a sudden it buzzes into life and i can start it no problem........I,m wondering if theres a relay somewhere that is linked to the ignition circuit thats dodgey ...I,ve already had the fuel pump relay changed twice just in case but the problem is still there ...looks like I,ll be paying the garage another visit to get it plugged in to see if any fault codes which are relevent appear this time!!!!!!(sulk!!)

Just had a look back in on this thread and realised that I didn't pay enough attention to the detail first time around and had thought it was a petrol model.
As it's a diesel and you mentioned about a relay in the ignition system, the engine electronics, including fuel pump relay supply are fed via the DDE relay. Now I know not a lot about the diesel engine models but here are 2 pics of where the relay may be located depending on your setup.(Relay is K2003)

Gildersol.........cheers mate.. the car go,s in mon 4th for another diagnostic check at the BMW dealer this time ..maybe they will find something (I,ll have to give them all my money and the shirt off my back prob' just for them to say ''cant find a problem mate...oh and heres the bill'') I'll ask about the DDE relay at my indy garage when I've got my results from the dealer (indy garage is half the price for labour and they use genuine parts)
I'll let you know how I get on!!
