    Hi,

I was trying to figure out if I can add an AUX in to my second hand '04 E46 and started pulling the dash apart. The radio connector was a bit tricky to wiggle around and I pulled something out and front channels stopped working. So I took the glove box out and found this "thing".

It's about 4"X5"x1" and was shoved in the rack under the fuse box area. All the cables were disconnected.
There are a load of black cables running from it.
Some go toward the steering wheel, some up towards the passenger air vent.
There are a couple of splices into the vehicle loom, probably for power.
Some go to the boot, the area the CD changer would go. Nothing connected to most of them, one pair has an LED on the end.
Also in there but without any sensible connection is a phone mute box. That was what was connected into the main radio connector. There is a female (connected to the loom connector), a bunch of cable and the mute box, and a male, that goes into the radio.

It says GPS on the side and has a GSM SIM slot with an Orange SIM in. GMS and GPS antenna ports and a 3.5mm socket (there is a 3.5mm plug floating around on a black wire pair) as well as the big multi way connector at the other end. None of the numbers off it match anything remotely useful in Google.

Anyone any ideas or do I just plug it in and wait for the self destruct mechanism to take over?

    Here are some pictures :

The dodgy dual connector on the radio connection and the black cable makes me think it's not a BMW original!
My best guess is it's a tracker of some sort. If it's a GPS, why no connections for a display? So, I could switch it on and get a visit from the local plod!

    Thanks,
    Max

I've moved this to the Auto Electrical section mate where you're more likely to get assistance, the Intro section is just for introductions

Sounds like a travel mate kind of thing with it having the radio mute functions etc. Look for a hidden button on the underside of the dash/steering column/ash tray for the "call" button.

Trackers normally don't have many wires going to them. Just one for antenna and one for positive power (has its own backup aswell) and it'd have nothing to do with the mute/vol function with the factory headunit.

Just wanted to add if you rummage around abit more you'll find a speaker somewhere (if its not using the car speakers) to confirm it is a Travel Mate
