I have had no problem since getting the car back.

Today I am off on about an 800 mile round trip and will report back by Thursday next week to say if I have any problems

I'm back from the trip and there are no problems to report.

It looks like the alternator caused the problem.

    Regards

Turns out it was the Alternator after all. In the morning, when first started, the battery was spiking. Within the Alternator, there is a regulator that should ensure the voltage never surges - it was this that was faulty. BMW have now fixed it and the car has been fine. Hope this helps anyone else that may have a similar iDrive problem.

If I were you I would buy a multimeter(can be got cheap) and the next time it does it put the meter on the battery and check the charge rate at the battery and IF you could get to it the charge at the rear of the alternator
I am glad bobst has found the problem! My car is going into the garage tomorrow. It actually just conked out a week ago. Came off the motorway and came to stop at the roundabout, and the car just died. Started it up again no probs, until I came to a stop again and it died again. No warnings on the iDrive or faults recorded. I thought this would be the perfect chance to take it straight to BMW, about 6 miles away. With some nifty left foot breaking, and ramming the auto box into neutral whilst coming to a stop, I could keep the car going. That is until 1 mile before reaching the dealer, the car miraculously cured itself

Anyway booked it in for them to have a look at it. When I said I would send the service manager some emails eg. photos of idrive with the errors on it etc to prove I was not going mad!! She happily accepted. When I emailed her the thread to this forum, she said she could not see this as she had no internet access, and could not even be bothered to forward it on to someone who had!! They seem very reluctant to take outside help on the matter....Seriously I give up!!!

Cut a long story short(er), the AA came round the following day. They picked up a couple of faults on the ECU eg. running lean, but also the voltage reading from the battery, and it was blipping over 15, which seems high according to the recommendations here and they also agreed.

So if I can get them to change the alternator, I am hoping this will be the end of it! Unless you folks thing there is something else happening..

Will report back when I know more!

So car went into dealership. No fault was found with the alternator :-). However they found faults and replaced both control valves for engine ventilation. This is why it was running lean, and this fault was causing the ECU to go bananas and throw random faults out and start shutting the car down.

    All repaired under warranty.

Exactly 1 month on and have had no problems since. Fingers crossed that is the end of it!

I have read your post and checked my voltage at the battery running, and it was 14.86v but kept spiking to 15.2v every few seconds.

I'm having a similiar problem with my 04 645 convertible. Did anyone ever solve this problem? My battery is less than a year old and the alternator was just replaced, still same issues. ????
