I have a November 2003 5 Series. My airbag/seatbelt light is on and the i-drive screen is displaying 'restraints system failure'. The garage think it is a Gateway Module Failure (at a cost of approx £1,200). Does anyone have any experience of this and how to remedy it, without spending £1,200.

The garage 'think' it's that module ? Wow.

I'd take it to another garage, and get them to read the codes, that WILL tell you what the problem is.

On this kinda thing, it's no good guessing, and throwing £1200 at something that might not fix it - Plus, that sounds damn expensive, i'm sure they're just trying to rip you off.

They are saying that when they tried to run the diagnostic, they can't because of a 'Gateway Module Failure', which is something that manages the safety systems, hence it's causing the warning lights. They also said that putting a new gateway module might 'knock out' other electronics and this could lead to more problems.

I'm not too familiar with the E39, and associated safety systems.
I've tried searching RealOEM, but can't find anything to do with this module.

Either wait, and someone might reply with the answer.

Or, take it to another garage, and got another diagnosis. Because £1200 still seems like an extortionate amount to me, I still think they're trying to rip you off.

There's nothing to eBay to do with the "Gateway Module", I smell bullshit. 'Restraints system failure' to me sounds like an airbag problem, or seat belt pretensioners. Which shouldn't stop a diagnosis being done.

Bollox it costs £1200. Try £650...I reckon you are better off going to a garage with DIS/MoDIC or Autologic to code it as well. Here it is on RealOEM

Hi, I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia .
    I have a problem with my e60.
The problem is my SGM airbag, the indicator seatbelt and airbag warning light in dashboard always on.
And the center display shown restraint system fault.

    And my question is,
Is there any other way to solve it without buy a new safety gateway module?
If I buy a SGM but a bit different part no, it can work as well or not?
    My part no is 65 77 69 75682

    Looking forward to your opinion.
    Thank you very much
