are they both not levelling? is there any noise when you turn ignition to indicate motors are working or not? there are a number of threads dealing with home repair of mechanical aspect of self levellers btw

Possibly a snapped levelling arm. Get your head under the car, there is a plastic arm connected to the front wishbones that measures the wheel position. If it snaps the lights fall to the lowest position.

If you don't have Xenons and hence don't have auto-levelling, then you won't have the self-levelling arm. The normal lights only run a calibration routine after being standing for more than about 30 minutes. If you turn the car on and off a lot they won't always run the levelling cycle.

took the car to my local bmw dealer going back through the cars history it had some parts replaced on the warranty 18 months ago with regards to the headlights and the self levelling .so they have indicated that it seems the problem will be covered by the warranty

This is interesting because i`m sure mine used to self level when I turned them on but then I was told the 3 series didn`t do this so I thought I was going mad . I have a facelift E46 vert with xenons , should they or shouldn`t they .....................?

The only cars that have self-levelling headlights are cars equipped with Xenons. It is accomplished using sensors on the wishbones that detect the load on the suspension and adjust the headlight aim dynamically.

Cars without Xenons go through a test/calibration sequence when the car is started where the lights cycle from the highest to the lowest position, before returning to the position set on the headlamp angle adjust wheel, where they remain for the entire journey unless the wheel is adjusted.

Dunno if the Xenons also run a test/calibration cycle. Probably do, it's the only way to detect faults in the motors.

The calibration cycle does not run twice in a 30 minute period I think.
