03 320 d touring 47k miles Problems starting when engine is warm, cold starts first go, but if you stop the car after a run leave it for 20 mins go back put the key in, let the diesel ind light go out and try to start, the engine doesn't turn over do this 3 or 4 times and the car then turns over and starts straight away thought it was the key losing its prog at first but tried all the keys and its still the same, some days its o.k , you can here a click when you try it, tried the battery conections they are o.k, I'm looking at the diesel ind light should that come on when the cars warm

If you can here a click but the engine wont start it sounds like your starter motor is sticking also check your battery as they dont last forever, you might have a dead cell in the battery which will hinder your car from starting...

Battery o.k (tested at last service) 13 mnth old, what amazes me is its not consistant, when it was a hot day in summer ( you know 1 of the 3 we get ) I first noticed it, but its doing it now after a run can you tell me if the glow plug light should be on even if the engine's hot ? I keep going down that path because when the light goes out its a similar click sound.
    THANKS

In despair at being stuck at a fuel fill up, had to wait for car to cool down before it would start had a new battery fitted ( problem still there ) took car to auto elec for his idea's, starter SOLENOID, it seems a number of dodgy french s/solenoids were fitted to late 01/03 cars and I had one, the solenoid arcs when warm and burns the faces, had a new solenoid fitted £60, but what a job to remove and put back. WILL BMW own up to this I wonder ???????
