The battery light came on at exactly the time as the front headlamps stopped working and the automatic gearbox warning symbol appeared on instrument panel and has gone into emergency mode. on inspection the v-belt is intact. Can anyone tell me if the alternator failing has this effect on the gearbox?

Thats great, thanks. Any idea why the lights popped? And where are the relays on the car?

Maybe you should get the alternator tested first...also, check the main drive/aux belt for wear.

Use a multimeter and check the charge rate at the battery, should be around 13.8 volts, check charge with revs held up as well

Sorry if this is a stupid question, when the alternator packed up, so did the headlights, i know where the fuse box is, but can't locate the fuses for the headlights, they aren't halogen lamps, any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    Fuse 52 = 30 amp

Which fuse box are you checking? IIRC there are two on yours (one in glove box and second in engine compartment)

As for fuses, check fuses 106 and 107 (50A) behind glovebox and fuse 9 and 32 in glovebox.
