Is there a guide to getting the door card off? (sorry I'm a newbie ) as someone said that there is a small clip holding on the door lock and that may have fallen down or got broken? Thanks

Rich, I'm not really sure what a "door card is," but look in the E46 section under technical guides. seems to be help on most things.
there is also a helpful chap on here Sam (not sure rest of username, but you could search through recent posts); he has a link to installing speakers, which involves taking door apart if that's the same thing?

the 'door card' is the panel on the inside of the door,i havent removed one a bmw before but be carefull as there is an airbag on these ones, one question though have you checked your keyfob to see if the remote still operates the boot opening? if it does still work then yes maybe your problem is in the drivers door,if not then maybe the fitted battery is goosed

Looking for a little help if possible (or a local Auto Electrician!)

I have a BMW 320D (52 plate saloon) and about 3 days ago the fob stopped working so I couldnt open the car automatically. No problem I thought as I will get a battery on the weekend for it and in the meantime I will use my key to open the car. However this morning I went to open the car and the key just turned in the barrel and I thought I heard something fall down inside the drivers side door card and since then when I go to start the car all 4 windows open automatically. It also does this when I turn the engine off and get out. As soon as I shut the door all 4 windows open.
Rich, the shaft from the lock cylinder to the door lock actuator fell inside the door. That is what you heard drop. I have instructions on how to fix on my web site. www.bmwgm5.com/lock_cylinder.htm
The windows are opening because when the shaft fell out it was when you were turning to unlock and the lock cylinder position sensor is still in the unlock position. You need to remove the broken lock cylinder, look down hole and with a large flat blade screwdriver set the white circle thing to the center detent position.
