The high level brake light does not work. Do I just need to check the fuses or does it mean a new fitting?

    depends,

First things first, i would expect it to be fused with the other brake lights, have you checked them?

    DO you have a multimeter?

stick you multimeter on Volts DC and check to see if you have a voltage there at, between the contacts,

If you do, you need a new bulb

if you dontyou have a problem somehwere else, check the wireing for any wear in the insulation etc. etc.

Thanks I don't have a multimeter. The car manual says consult BMW service as this light has LEDs

AH, can you get it apart?

in theroy LED's should last forever so i would expect it to be a bad solder joint in the light its self
