Hi all, new to this forum, first posting.
Bought car three years ago and battery has completely drained intermittently. New alternator followed a few months later by a new battery about 18 months ago and everything has worked ok until last month. One of the fans seems to keep going long after engine stops. Garage now advises that battery and alternator are fine and a diagnostic check reveals no fault codes. Any ideas?

You need to perform a parasitic drain test, http://www.wikihow.com/Find-a-Parasitic-Battery-Drain

One item that is common for causing a drain is the FSU, Final Stage Resistor. You can usually hear the interior heater fan running slightly and may feel some air flow out of the foot vents.

Also have you checked the fan you can hear running does indeed stop? Some Siemens relays are also known to cause problems with them malfunctioning and keeping power to items.

Try disconnecting your FSU (hedgehog) as this is the usual suspect. If the battery holds charge with it disconnected then you need to replace it. They do normally have symptoms (intemittent heating etc) but not always. It wont cost you anything to find out and will allow you to eliminate it, if it turns out not to be the problem.

Here is a link, that shows where it is located, how to disconnect and remove.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

Hi Snacky et all- 1st posting also, interesting and useful info on forum. I've had e39 530D touring 03reg for 3 yrs - now on 68k. All going fine until this cold snap - battery been going nearly totally flat after 1 day idle, even after a long run - have had to keep jumping it - AA checked batt. & alternator - all OK - so will try the 'hedgehog' solution - thanks Ronnie. However, if do need new batt. grateful if any one could suggest best buy - possibly Bosch S5 !!

when you switch the engine off have a feel down in the passenger footwell and feel if its still pumping air out, especially after the electrical systems are supposed to go the sleep (16 mins)
