    Good evening all.

I am having trouble with my 2001 E46 330i SE. Sometimes the car will idle very irratically with the revs jumping between 500 rpm to just under 2000 rpm. Also when approaching junctions, when the clutch is dipped the engine will cut out all together.

This does not happen all the time, and there is no pattern to when it does happen, i.e. when the engine is hot or cold, or whether the car has done a long run or not, it just does it when it feels like it, but over the past few days it is becoming more common.

Any help on this would be great as I am not too sure where to start

    many thanks

    Paul

The things i would check first are..
Splits in the air pipes that are causing the wrong mix
Faulty camshaft sensor (this will need a code read)

Sorry should have said, i had a fault code reading done today and there are no faults on the ecu what so ever.

I will try having a lot for any split pipes. Are there any common ones that go or is it a case of hunting around?

The maf sensor reads the amount of air being taken into the engine so check the pipes after that, if you have an air leak it would cause extra air to be sucked in causing the fuel/air mix to be wrong.
You could also unplug the maf sensor and the engine will operate at the default setting, if this cures the fault it will be a faulty maf, a faulty maf won't have shown up on a code read.

hmm, you have got me thinking now. I posted on here about a week ago about my cruise control not working, and somebody said that my MAF was probably faulty and that was stopping the cruise control from working.

Sure enough i replaced the MAF sensor and the cruise control is now working, so I wonder if I have either got a faulty MAF, or I have damaged something in the proccess of fitting it. The only thing that I find strange is how its not there all the time.

Air leaks are very erratic, engine vibration can cause a split to open up and even close up, just double check the maf is fitted correctly.

Right, had a feew hours to look at the car today, and could not find any air leaks. stripped all the intake hoses down and made sure everything went back together with out any leaks. Sprayed some cleaner around the engine bay with the engine running to try and locate an split in a pipe and nothing happened, and the car has been worse than ever today. I have noticed a bit of hesitation on the initial power input after a gear change too.

Any help would be great on this becuase I am fresh out of ideas and dont know where to look next.

    Thanks

    Paul

Hi, I have the smaller engine and having problems, no codes all hoses checked and replaced where needed and still having problems. The only thing the garage has found is the fuel pressure drops so am replacing fuel pump. maybe worth checking. Jim
The older I get the wrong bit gets stiff !!
