Ok, after a little more research, there are definitely 2 relays linked to the IHKA. One relay is joined to the AC control module and is the compressor control relay...the other one is joined from the IHKA and switches the 12V to the output stage which is connected to the blower motor. So the 2 wires from the IHKA are the 2.8V signal and the 12V switched supply to the FSU.

Neal,It would appear that we are both correct!!The wiring diagrams that I checked show that the later cars, from 99 on do NOT use a relay for the blower.Early cars,OR manual AC cars(IHKR systems) also use a relay for the blowers.

Hey mate, I recently had the exact same symptoms on my car - fan just stopped working one day, then started working again a couple of times, but was quite random in when it decided to work - it turned out to be the resistor - not sure of the full name, but its this module thing thatfits in the driver well, above the pedals. Cost about £70 for a new one from the stealers. My indie referred to it as the fan regulator and thats what i asked for at the dealers, and they knew what i meant, but called it the heat resistor or something like that..
