    Hi guys, first post!

Just bought the above car and im working my way around it and I have a few questions.

Its only got the 1 key (for info purposes), sometimes when I get in the car put key in, turn once and wait for lights to go out (my usual proceedure) the key will turn once but nothing will fire, then the key will not turn again.

So I turn the ignition fully off and try again and usually it will take a good 4-5 times of doing this before it will turn over. Its usually when the engine is warm. I have tried it with handbrake on and off, clutch in and out, first gear, neutral but it seems just random.

Is there some safety device or something I dont know about? Its very annoying if this happens in traffic if I stall.

    Cheers.

sounds like either ignition barrell fault or starter motor failing, does the starter click when you turn the key or do you mean it turns over but wont fire?

if it doesnt turn over then Id defo be looking at the barrell failing or the starter motor, does the starter sound slow or rough when it turns?

Hi, think you have the same problem as I have, see 03 E46 320d touring warm start up probs further down the page, seen a beemer specialist HE said if it doesnt turn over its your KEY, I have 3 keys and and it does it on all of them so doubt it being the losing the programme reason, Hope to check the starter motor connection this w/end but what baffle's me as your's must do is it only does it when its warm ? A chap on this site sugg a battery cell but would that not effect cold starts more this time of year. One wiz said your losing the earth as the engine moves/vibrates when running but the engine would cut out if that was the case, If you get any good ideas/repairs please let me know

you may both find its the bushes in your starter motor are worn and when you are attempting to start the car the starter is locking up. Have you noticed it getting any worse or???

    Right,

I turn the key to the 2 position (next turn should fire) and when I turn it to 3 nothing happens, no fire, no click, nothing. Release key and it springs back to 2 position.

Now what is interesting is that if you try to turn it back to 3 position from 2 after a "non start" it doesnt turn (the key physically, like its locked) so you have to turn it back to 1 before trying to fire again.

Noticably from cold (been trying different methods) I never have a problem if firing with key so BMW logo (top of key) is facing upwards when putting key in, problems only occur if the logo is face down when key is put in.

    Coincidence?

To answer the above, its not getting any worse (seems to happen once every 4-5 attempts) and the starter motor sounds fine and it fires within a second of turning.

Just had mine checked (03 320d touring ) warm start prob, at a BMW specialist, checked Keys the LOT, came up clear the only light they can shine on it is MAGNETIC/ELECTRONIC fields, if it does it in one parking pos, go back a couple of days later to same spot and try it again !!!! do other makes have this prob ? Or is this just a BEEMER glich ? This place say they have met this prob before . Good Luck

I got my starter replaced after it was difficult to start when warm. Since then there has been no problems.
