I don't think they get "hot to the touch"....

You really need to let the rear screen mist up to test it.
    Or, get your multimeter out.

THere's a relay for this behind the trim at the right hand side of the boot. Can you hear it click when you operate the heater?
Oh, just noticed NeilP already mentioned this

    Hi All

Sorry for dragging up an old thread but I have the same problem. My rear windscreen is not demisting, however the wing mirrors still work fine when I turn it on. I want to check this relay but I'm not particularly technical. Are these relays cheap? I could just buy a new one, swap it out and see if it fixes it. Or can someone explain in "idiot guide" terms how to do this? (including gaining access to the relay)

Many thanks for your help, I just want to be able to see out the back again!

Oh, I have already checked the fuses and the are fine. I even replaced them just in case but it made no difference.

    Cheers
    Pete

    Hi
I had a similar issue on my old E46 where the heated rear screen would not work and the light illuminated on the switch. On mine it turned out that the earth wire from the screen was loose. It is located behind the C pillar trims which run up the side of the rear window between the rear doors and rear window. They just pull off. I tightened the earth up and all was sorted. The window does warm up slightly and can be felt with your hand.
    Regards
    Jim
