I had a similar issue when trying to install INPA on the laptop using the very same modified VAG KKL lead.
My issue resolved itself when I found out that the lead actually was using Com 4 when connected,
not Com 1 as selected during INPA installation.

Sorry if I'm "teaching my Grandma to suck eggs" here but if you go to:

    System Information on the laptop
    - select Hardware Tab
    - click on Device Manager button, the computers devices now are listed.
    - now click the + on the "Ports (COM & LPT) it will now expand to show all the port details, now plug in your Vag Com lead into the USB port and see if it updates its Com number.
If it does you have to select this Com number when reinstalling INPA, or IIRC you can alter some info in one of the Eidebas files, but I'm not 100% sure which one!!!

Again my apologies if you've already verified this.

    Good Luck

Ian S - Yes I have soldered pins 7 & 8, and I have setup odb.ini to use usb. I have some instructions on installation, and I have run obdsetup.exe. However I have not done anything about ubatt! Please tell me more. And yes please, a known working obd.ini would be very welcome.

SlowTech - Yes, all sorted and set to COM1, but thankyou anyway as it was something that was a problem earlier on with installation.
    Cheers,
    Tim

Sorry the info's not the issue TigerTim, I'm sure you'll have it up and running soon though

Nice one Ian S, that certainly looks like the contents of the file that you can edit to alter the Com port settings

Ian S - Thanks, I now have the modified ini file in place, we'll see tonight if it has sorted it.

SlowTech - Thanks for the support.
    Cheers,
    Tim

did you ever get this scanner to work. I am getting the same error on my 2000 E46 318i and thought I would check the web before I dive too deep into it...
