I have been trying to read the OBD2 system for fault codes on my 2001 E46 330d, but I keep getting link errors or cable errors. I have tried 2 different interfaces on my laptop, various software, and a dedicated ODB2 scanner, but with no luck. I am sure I have codes to read as I have a few running problems, but can't get at them

    Please, any suggestions...
    Cheers,
    Tim

Bit concerned that you cannot connect with a dedicated scanner. Which one did you use?

As for your laptop, is that XP with a USB to serial converter? Have you changed the com port it's using in device manager? Have you tried them on another BMW?

Can you connect to any modules at all?

Have you seen this Carsoft troubleshooting document yet?

The scanner I have used is a U480, just get a `link error` displayed on the screen after it tries to connect and runs through all it's protocols. I have successfully tried it on the wifes Peugeot 306.

Yes my Laptop is XP with USB port simulating a serial port connection. It does have a serial port but I couldn't get a serial OBD interface.

I cannot link to any modules at all, won't seem make contact with the OBD system.

I have not read the Carsoft document yet, but will read it tonight.
    Cheers,
    Tim

Interesting, all the carsoft interfaces I have used were serial.

Which Inpa lead are you using? Have you modified the obd.ini accordingly?

I'd be tempted to take the car to a specialist to confirm whether it's a wiring problem / something has hung rather than an install problem.

Well, thanks to the advice recieved, and some more research I found part of my problem, the INPA software had set itself up to use the ADS type interface. I have now reinstalled it and got it setup to use the OBD inteface on the USB port. The interface itself is setup on COM1, and I now have a modified VAG KKL lead as described else where.

However I now have a different error code generated by INPA - `IFH-0003 Data transmission to interface disturbed`.

    Any more advice greatfully recieved.
    Cheers,
    Tim

So you have soldered pin 7+8 together and have modified the obd.ini to use USB and turned off the ubatt? Have you got installation instructions for Inpa? Did you run OBDsetup.exe?

I run the same setup, would a copy of the OBD.ini help you?
