My instrument cluster has issues, Rev counter works intermittently, speedo doesn't work most of the time, the fuel meter lies through it's german teeth (run out of fuel twice...gets quite embarressing if I'm honest), a couple of warning lights are on (ABS, Traction control and handbrake), but aside from those the car runs all find and there's no issues with the abs etc.
A friend who runs a garage (but doesn't specialise in Bmw's) had a quick look with his obd port plug-in doohicky of justice and apparently did a cluster reset but it didn't fix anything, it just made the speedo and rev counter go up and down a lot. It did come up with a couple of codes though. One of them being the nearside rear wheel sensor so I shall have a hunt for that on the next dry day off (the other code was to do with cylinder 2 misfiring I think, can't see how that's anything to do with the dash being on the blink, but thought I'd put it as all/any info might help).
Another friend and I took the battery positive off to see if that reset anything but that didn't work either so we took the instrument cluster out to see if that had any effect. The only effect being that now the bit at the bottom middle of the cluster that shows the car diagram and odometer is now kaputt also.
I read on another thread on here that someone suggested taking the battery off for 24 hours. I've yet to try that, but in my experience with cars that very rarely works with anything (and I've had my fair share of regular to performance cars all of which have had issues of some kind) However, I'm new to BMW's so will try anything the Bimmer Gurus suggest. Whilst it drives beautifully (and actually, literally just flex through it's MOT) I'm not sure the plod would be too chuffed if they pulled me over and asked me if I knew what speed I was doing and I reply with "I actually don't have a clue officer, but I guess 70.....ish") so any ideas would be BRILLIANT!!! :-)
