My mum recently purchased a 2001 E46 320i SE. 64k on clock, 2 previous owners, very well looked after.

She collected on Thursday and until yesterday it's been fine.

I've asked my mum to find out the exact model of system, but around the Radio/CD/Sat Nav controls etc it says "BMW Navigation System" and judging by the fact it's a small orange lit up screen (not full colour) I'm assuming it must be one of the first or the first navigation system BMW used.

Basically, the CD/Radio/Sat-Nav display isn't working, or is working intermittently. After my mum removed the CD Changer and put it back in again, the system has been iffy, sometimes working sometimes not. Tried several combinations of sat-nav disk and cd changer being in/not in etc but still having the same issue.

The first time it didn't come I simply removed the CD Changer, put it back in again and then the system worked. But that's not working now either.
The climate control screen below it with temperature etc is working fine, and the trip computer with mpg, average speed etc is working on the main dash.

One thing I noticed was that although the Sat-Nav system takes in the DVD and ejects it, the light next to where it says 'Power' is never lit.

My mum also called me this morning saying when the radio did come on the display looked like it was fading on/off.

Could this be a loose connection somewhere or is it likely to be the whole unit needing to be replaced?

Is there any reboot process I can try on the system to see if it just needs resetting?

Sounds like a Radio Navigation system. Even that's too old skool for me ...I would just check the connections mate before deciding what to do .

Cheers mate I'll have another look at the connections and fuses and go from there, hoping it's something simple as it could potentially cost a fortune.

This is the best photo I can find on the net atm, I can get a photo myself over the next day or so.

Tried enlarging it but the quality was very poor

Yep...that's the Radio Nav system. There are some kicking about on ebay...but bit overpriced for refurb units.
