I have just brought my first BMW its a Y plate 320i se 4 dr 2.2.
The onboard computer does not seem to work . If i press the button on the end of the indicator stalk nothing happens . On the clock it shows temprature all the time.Is this a common fault ? is it usually the switch which is at fault ? what does the on board computer acctually do , is it worth repairing ?
    cheers,Luke

    coolhandluke, welcome to the forum

Which type of OBC do you have, how many buttons does it have?

Also, what happens when you press the buttons on the OBC itself?

On the E36 the OBC is located in the centre console below the stereo and heater controls.

I'm not sure if it's the same on the E46.

I shall message another member who is more familiar with the E46

Yeah. The OBC display is at the bottom of the dash on the E46

It sounds to me like the OBC switch may be faulty if you have a readout on the OBC, but cant change it

Here is how you can test the OBC and see if it runs through the cycle shown above ((meaning its working)

Instructions to access the hidden OBC functions:
    1. Hold Trip Reset while turning ignition key to on position
    2. OBC should show "Test"
    3. Use Trip Reset to select function 19.0 that unlocks all the features
    3. Wait for display to show "Off"
    4. Depress Trip Reset for 1/4 second and release it
    5. With no delay press Trip Reset several times to select one of the following functions

If your car has the stalk with the OBC button on the end, it has the OBC in it! but if the car has no OBC stalk, then you need to buy one, fit it, and get BMW to activate the OBC that are installed on all E46s.

i can get it to show test but how do i select function 19.0 ? i can only get 1.0 to 1.7....does the fact that i can get these mean the computer is working ...therefore change the stalk to get working ?

You should be able to cycle through to 19 by pressing the trip repeatedly a good few times.

If you can get that to work then that unlocks functions 3 - 18

Meaning you can have MPH as a digital readout in the OBC and lots more.

it sounds like if you get the TEST display on the OBC and can cycle through codes that you have an OBC...

Have another go is my advice

Have you compared any of the menus you are getting to the list above?

Try this version of the guide

To access a whole slew of data and the instrument cluster test on an e46:
    1. with the ignition off, hold the left instrument button
    2. turn the key to position 1 (radio)
    3. If you let go of the button and press again you will cycle through the following 20 tests.
    4. If you want to acess the submenus, release the button while a test menu number is being diplayed, within a second, you will see Test number.0. You can then click again to cycle through the submenus. To get back to the main menu, press and hold the left key until you see the test number without the ".0".
    5. Note, you can only access tests 1 and 2 without unlocking-- to unlock the other tests, go to test 19 and wait for the display to say "l-off", then click again. Now you can cycle through to the other tests

Not sure if it will help at all but Im struggling on this one to be honest.
    I will keep looking..
