hi, I havent been on here for a while as the car has been in mothballs for a while. I have been using it again since Saturday and it has been fine.
Today the airbag light has come up. It did this once before and I fitted a passenger occupancy bypass box and it was fine. Ok this could have gone t1ts up and cause this problem again, but this time it is a little different. The MPG gauge has stopped working as well and this has thrown me a little. have any of you had this same fault or should I just buy another bypass box and see how we go.

need to get the codes read first, there are a number of things that can cause that to come one, occupancy mat is one, pretensioners etc
and while the bypass will resolve the occupancy it wont the pretensioners.

if there is no one around to read and you dont want to go to a dealer/indy
    try a dedicated b800 unit
or inpa / pa soft with a laptop to do more too

bypassess - get from ebay - a member here sells them BMW PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY BYPASS MAT SENSOR AIRBAG E46E36E38E39E60E65M3M5Z3X5 | eBay
his are the only ones ive found that also correctly tell the car the seat is occupied.

regarding mpg, not likely to be connected
with pa soft/ inpa you could do a code read and instrument cluster check and reset

who did you buy the box from Chris? I do know of one seller who simply wrapped the wires with no soldering. If it was me (Smiler_Mac) then I will simply replace it if you just PM me your info, although I've only ever had 1 fail on me but I think it was more to do with the guy's black box as when I got it back it was OK

one thing I think is well worth the investment as a BMW owner, like mrwhite has already mentioned, is the OBD II cable as they pay for themselves after a few uses as you can get them for £25-30

hi Lee, when did your light come on and did it start coming on intermittently? if it came on intermittently while you had a passenger then chances are it's the occupancy mat sensor

it could be a few things to be honest such as the occupancy mat sensor, seatbelt pre-tensioner or battery safety terminal along with just about anything else SRS related to be honest if the light was already on. That's why it's probably better to read the codes yourself first so you focus in on the right thing. Again, a £25-30 OBD II cable is the thing to have if you don't know anyone who can do it for free. That's because most garages will probably charge that just to read the codes (although some may be free and they also quote you)

The airbag light was on when I bought the car!! I have purchased the bypass box from yourself and will get a chance to fit it when I've repaired my daughters car for her MOT. Lee

I'm always wary of when an airbag light is already on when buying a car as I know of 2 people who have had nightmares with this but overall this is rare of course

it's no problem at all helping you and hopefully the battery disconnect may help but if not then a diagnosis/reset is certainly the next step I'd recommend. Like I said, get a price first and also hint on that you may need to come back to get a reset for free if it doesn't reset straight away after diagnosis because the fault lies elsewhere

yeah fitting the unit by itself does not always resolve the issue you need to clear the error code
removing battery for half an hour may do it
but get your self a cable
or if your near birmingham, people who come to me can get a free code read/ reset
