I bought my self a set of http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-XENON-CONV...713.m153.l1262HID to fit to my motorbike, then thought I'd try them on the Betsy first.
Yeah Yeah, law law ,legal legal, wrangle wrangle yapity yapidy. Go on devil take the HIDmost . Fitting the units was a mini faf which would have been much easier for a good set of instructions. The starters more or less mount in the slots which BMW designed into the headlight moulding for HID starters. And my new starters slipped right in on custom made brackets, (yup the kid done good).
Having completed the job, I now appreciate:
1 I would have been wise to buy two purpose made HID bulb holders off flea bay rather than modifying standard Beemer kit.
2 I knew that Betsy had been in a minor prang when I bought her. The front near side wing had been replaced, but a nice repair job had been done with original parts. What I didn’t know is that the bumper had been left bent upwards out of position by about 10mm, making removal of the headlights a struggle and replacement…. phew tighter than a Mallards water tight orifice.
3 The starters are supplied as a pair and I installed them rr's about face, so I had to stop, have a cuppa before swapping them over.
I did have one real problem, one of the connectors on the HV supply was not home in the connector housing and the cable dropped out, thankfully after I worked out which way the connector fitted in the housing, it just slid in and a tug with a long nose pliers saw it seated neatly.
I took Betsy out Sunday night, filthy weather, heavy rain, high winds, standing water falling leaves all in all ideal stay indoors weather, or ideal test your headights conditions. As a driver the HID light was great being both brighter and a better colour, cutting through the dark to pick up cats eyes and white lines like never before. Night driving was soooooo much clearer. BUT the levels of light spill were quite high, much higher than I’d consider acceptable. I taped off the top of both headlight lens with black electrical tape and this made a huge improvement but this is not a long term solution and I was still less than 100 % happy with the spill.
Three hours later and my hands were bleeding, my fingers raw, and I had got yellow spots in front of my eyes. No I’d not just watched a HD porn film staring Keira Knightley No. I spent all evening trying to adjust the light spill. I moved the bulbs forward nah no good, shrouded the bulb (a bit better but nah still no good) recessed the bulbs back and the end result? Carp. Total and complete Carp, the light spill was quite unacceptable with bright banding at a number of spots and loads of light above the cut off. So out they came ready to fit to the bike.
I’ve not given up on Betsy yet, any one tried these bad boys???
