Hopefully someone will be able to give me some insight into what the problem might be.

I've recently purchased a BMW 316ti se (compact) and there is a slight problem with the central locking.
When you unlock the car using the remote control all the passenger door unlocks however the drivers door doesn't.

You can manually unlock the drivers door using the key. The weird thing is when you press the button to lock the car both the driver & passenger doors lock, so there some slight issue with the unlocking part on the drivers door.

Does anybody know the best way to troubleshoot this issue?

try unlocking the car with the remote while you have the key in the drivers door in the unlocking position.i know the doors will be unlocked but try that anyway.

Check the central locking thing under the passenger seat then under the carpet. clean away any corrosion.

Sounds like the door actuator, its a common fault on the E46 so theres plenty of guides on the net
