I have recently bought a 2001 316i around 4 months ago, ive had a problem of it taking 10-15 turns of the key to get it started, i get nothing except the dash lighting up as if the immobiliser is preventing it, ive had it back from where i bought it but to be honest their bobbins, the best they could tell me was code 140 "key 2 implausible"

I must admit the car is used very little and even when it is its short journeys

i have done some digging, is it true that theres a chip in the key which needs charging (which is done while in the ignition) and because its not being used its not got charge enough (i only have the 1 key)

Help with this would be really appreciated, i got rid of a belting problem free motor for this and its DRIVING ME MAD Evil or Very Mad

    No luck on thebmwforum.com then?

The key has a transponder chip in it but it doesn't get "charged up" The ignition barrel has a receiver ring that senses the chip in the key. If the chip "code" matches that programmed into the cars ECU then it disables the immobiliser.

Either the receiver isn't picking up the key (which you could have tested if you had another key) or the chip in your key is damaged / faulty.

First thing is to get another key - they are only available from the dealer but come pre-cut and pre-coded for your car. You need to take the V5 in your name and some ID along and they will order you one.

If the new key gives the same fault then you need to look at the transponder receiver.

The bad starting could be the immobiliser cutting in & out or it could be a coincidence and the car has another problem.

For an E36 they are about £40 but may be more for a E46. Try a few dealers as they are franchises and prices do differ. Even if the new key doesn't solve the problem you still need another one anyway......

Did this problem resolve itself with the extra key or what? i belive i have the same problem, but i havee two keys and they both do the same thing, it seems that the codes just go out of sync. Whats your status on this?
